Grades 7 - 8

My name is Debbie Huskey. I have had the privilege of both teaching
at Life Academy for 10
years as well as watching my own children complete their junior high and high school
education there.
The things that make this school unique are many. I found that the
Bible was taught daily, and the staff lived their relationship with Christ in
front of my children passionately.
In the school year of 2010-2011, we implemented the ABeka Curriculum for our junior high
and senior high classrooms. Seventh through 12th graders rotate through 5
different teachers for Math, Science, English, Bible, Social Studies and
Electives.
Life Academy recognizes that each student comes to us at different
levels and with a variety
of unique needs. We test each student as they come in so that we may best meet their
needs. Students that move quickly in one subject may be placed in upper
level classes for that subject. That same student may be placed in
a lower level class for a subject that requires more practice for them to
consume the class content.
I love working with young adults. Many times students come to us at
this age because they are struggling in junior high or senior high school
after doing better in elementary.
They need the immediate accountability, and their parents
appreciate the direct communication with their teachers. Once we identify the
holes in their education, either from a bad year or a need to repeat
information to retain it, and fill those holes, the students begin to soar. Their self esteem rises as they recognize that they are smarter than they thought. Getting to watch
that amazing transformation is one of my favorite things.
We participate in a Christian and Home School League for
sports. This is a great opportunity
for our students. Many times our public schools are so large that only the truly
practiced athletes are able to participate in sports. The league is very
competitive and really enjoyable.
Every year I accompany our students to national competition in
Carlinville, Illinois. We
compete in a variety of things for four days against other Christian schools. The
students meet many other students and share in a week that is similar to a
camp week of great preaching. We leave exhausted after preparing wood working,
soloists, instrumentalists, preachers, track events, volleyball and basketball
teams, etc., and come back with awards and stories to share.
